Depends on the month bmw switched production somewhere in 2015 but I would just try to find a car with the b48 engine as it is much more reliable. The later N20 engines don't habe suddenly snapping chains. They still have wearing chains that require replace every 200k to 250k km. Wastegate, waterpomp problems and more.
The transmission seems more happily mated to the engine in Comfort mode on the 330i. Oddly, the Sport mode didn't seem to change the driving dynamics in the 330i as much as the 328i. I double checked to ensure drivetrain was checked, and it was. The 328i feels peppier and more rev-happy in Sport than the 330i does.
And the last problem with the N20 engine is infamous, the charge pipe failure. The charge pipe is the pipe that feeds the engine with the compressed air. Sometimes people tend to crank up the boost levels from the turbocharger to their engine, and when they do, the charge pipe can fail and cause the turbo not to work.

I've ran it a year with no problems and you can either remove it before bringing it in for service (it's 3 clips and takes 5 min to do yourself) or leave it on.
It depends on how many miles are on the BMW, and which models of BMW. E.g. my F30 328i was sold at 8.5 yrs and 80k miles with total out-of-pocket expense of $2k (after 4-yr/50k miles free maintenance + new car warranty) including: 2 sets of tires. 5 dealer oil changes. indy spark plugs. dealer coolant + brake.
The car all checked out with the acception of a small leak localized to the turbo area. I have attached two pictures the mechanic has sent of the leak, I have no experience with turbos (currently own a 325i e90), or n20 engines, so I have no context of what the photos are looking at. I know the photos are less than great but its unfortauntly I
The F30 maintenance is relatively straight forward. 1. oil change every 1-yr/10k-mile (post MY14) 2. wiper blade insert every year or two dependent on use. 3. spark plugs every 60k miles (4 oil changes pre MY14, 6 oil changes post MY14) 4. cabin filter and brake fluid change every 2 years from production date.
